If you’ve spent weeks digging through caves, fending off creepers at night, and wondering if you’ll ever get past the early grind, you’re not alone. Most new players pick up the game with no clear end goal, until they hear the vague rumor that you can actually “beat” it. We’ve put this guide together after 12+ full playthroughs to break down exactly how to beat Minecraft without wasting hours on useless tasks or getting stuck on tough boss fights. You don’t need fancy mods or years of experience to pull this off, just a little patience and the right step-by-step plan.
How to Beat Minecraft: Pre-Nether Prep You Can’t Skip
The first 2 hours of your playthrough will make or break how fast you can progress to the end game, and the biggest mistake new players make is getting distracted by unnecessary builds or side tasks early on. Start by punching 8 blocks of wood as soon as you spawn, craft a full set of wooden tools, then immediately hunt for coal and stone to upgrade to stone tools before night falls. You only need a tiny 3x3 base with a bed for the first few nights, don’t waste time building a giant castle before you have basic gear. You only need 10 obsidian to make a Nether portal, so once you find 3 diamonds for a diamond pickaxe, mine 10 obsidian near a lava pool and build your portal right next to your base for easy access.
Before you step foot in the Nether, make sure you have a full set of iron armor, a diamond sword, a diamond pickaxe, and at least 10 torches to light up dark areas you explore. Prioritize getting at least 64 steak or cooked porkchop before heading to the Nether, you don’t want to run out of food mid-exploration when you’re surrounded by ghasts and piglins. It’s also a good idea to enchant your diamond sword with Sharpness II or III if you have enough XP, it will make fighting blazes and the Ender Dragon way faster later on.
Critical Nether Tasks to Check Off Before Moving to the End
The Nether can feel overwhelming when you first spawn in, but you only need to collect a small list of items to progress, you don’t have to explore every biome or loot every fortress you find. As soon as you enter, build a small cobblestone shelter around your portal to protect it from ghast blasts, so you don’t get stuck in the Nether if a ghast destroys the portal frame. Your first priority is to find a Nether fortress, which spawns randomly in all Nether biomes, you can usually spot them from far away by their dark brick structure. Once you find one, kill blazes to collect blaze rods, you need at least 6 to make eyes of ender to activate the end portal. Fire resistance potions are non-negotiable for exploring the Nether safely, brew a few with nether wart and magma cream once you find a nether wart farm in the fortress, they will save you from accidental lava falls and ghast fire blasts that would otherwise end your run instantly.
Before you leave the Nether, make sure you have all of these items checked off your list:
- At least 7 blaze rods (6 for eyes of ender, 1 extra for blaze powder to power your bow if you use a spectral bow later)
- 2+ stacks of netherrack to build bridges over lava lakes and block off endermen in the End
- 3 pieces of nether wart to brew fire resistance and strength potions for the Ender Dragon fight
- At least 10 ender pearls collected from endermen you encounter in warped forests, to avoid having to hunt for them in the overworld later
How to Find and Activate the End Portal Without Wasting Time
Once you have 12 eyes of ender (crafted from 1 blaze powder and 1 ender pearl each), you’re ready to find the stronghold that holds the end portal. Hold an eye of ender in your hand and right click to throw it, it will float 10-20 blocks in the direction of the nearest stronghold, then fall to the ground so you can pick it up again. Follow the direction it points, throwing a new eye every 500 blocks or so to adjust your path, as strongholds usually spawn 1000-2000 blocks away from your spawn point. When the eye floats down instead of up when you throw it, you’re standing directly above the stronghold, so start digging down carefully, making sure you don’t fall into hidden caves or lava pools under the surface.
Once you find the stronghold, explore it until you find the end portal room, which has a 3x3 frame of end portal blocks floating over a pool of lava. Most portals already have 1-2 eyes of ender placed in the frames, so you’ll only need to add the remaining ones to activate it. Always set your spawn point near the stronghold before activating the portal, so if you die in the End, you don’t have to travel all the way back from your original base to try again. Pack extra building blocks, a bow with at least Power 3, 2 stacks of arrows, and 2 strength potions for the dragon fight, and you’re ready to enter the End.
Pro Tricks to Beat the Ender Dragon on Your First Try
When you first spawn in the End, you’ll be on a small obsidian platform near the main island, immediately run off the platform onto the main island and build a small 2x2 cobblestone shelter to hide in, so endermen don’t attack you when you accidentally look at them. Your first priority is to destroy all the end crystals sitting on top of the obsidian pillars around the island, these crystals heal the Ender Dragon constantly, so you can’t kill it until all of them are gone. Use your bow to shoot the crystals from a distance, don’t climb the pillars unless you have to, the dragon will knock you off into the void if you’re not paying attention. For crystals that have iron cages around them, you can climb the pillar, break one block of the cage, then hit the crystal with your sword to destroy it.
Once all the crystals are destroyed, the dragon will start flying around the island, and will periodically fly low to the central exit portal to rest. When it does, drink your strength potion, run up to it, and hit it with your diamond sword as many times as you can before it flies away again. Don’t stand directly in front of the dragon when it’s low, it can hit you 10+ blocks back and knock you into the void, and you’ll lose all your gear instantly. If you do get knocked off the edge of the island, throw an ender pearl as fast as you can to teleport back to the main island, it’s a trick that has saved hundreds of our playthroughs from certain death.
Once the dragon’s health bar hits zero, it will explode and drop thousands of XP orbs, plus a dragon egg on top of the central portal. You’ve officially beaten the game at this point, you can either jump into the portal to watch the end credits and go back to your overworld base, or stay to explore the outer end islands for elytra and shulker boxes if you want to enjoy post-game content.
Beating the game doesn’t have to be a months-long project, even if you’re only playing a few hours a week.
